War service: Egypt, Western Front Taken on strength, 47th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 3 March 1916. Trnsferred to 15th Bn, 14 March 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 1 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 8 June 1916. Transferred to 4th Machine Gun Company, 13 September 1916. Admitted to 4th Australian Field Ambulance, 11 November 1916; transferred to 8th General Hospital, Rouen, 15 November 1916 (rectal abscess); to England, 20 November 1916; discharged from 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, on furlough, 20 December 1916, to report to Command Depot, Perham Downs, 4 January 1917. Found guilty, 21 March 1917, of being absent without leave from midnight, 21 March, to 10 pm, 2 April 1917: awarded 13 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeited 26 days' pay. Marched out to Machine Gun Training Depot, Grantham, 10 April 1917.
