Tried by District Court Martial, Parkhouse Camp, Salisbury Plain, 2 September 1916. Found Guilty of (1) striking his superior officer; (2) disobeying a lawful command given by his superior officer. Sentenced to 9 months' imprisonment with hard labour. Three months of sentence with hard labour remitted, 12 September 1916.

Transferred to 2nd Field Artillery Brigade, 28 July 1917.

Wounded in action, Belgium, 15 August 1917 (gun shot wound, abdomen and right arm amputated).

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Runic', 20 December 1917; discharged, Brisbane, 20 March 1918.
