Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of a Lewis gun section. When his officer was wounded he led his platoon with great dash and determination, overcoming all opposition and inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy. With his Lewis gun he dispersed a hostile counter attack, and by the courage and initiative which he displayed until he was severely wounded very largely contributed to the defeat of the enemy.'
