War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Admitted from Alexandria to ANZAC Base, Mudros, 4 December 1915; discharged to Anzac from Mudros, 6 December 1915. Disembarked Alexandria, 7 January 1916 (general Gallipoli evacuation). Transferred to 60th Bn from 8th Bn, Serapeum, 22 February 1916; taken on strength of 60th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 24 February 1916. Rejoined unit from Zeitoun School of Instruction, 25 March 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Wounded in action, 19 July 1916. Effects in German hands, 16 September 1916, now being reported as killed in action on 19 July 1916. Paybook found amongst the effects of Prisoners of War and handed into the General Military Pay Office without further particulars, 21 October 1916. Red Cross File No 1360512 has statement from 2896 Pte C. MAYHEW, B Company, 60th Bn, 28 February 1917: 'He was a signaller and got across into the German lines. He was killed there. [ 2924] Lt C. Finnie (a Pte,. in the Fleurbaix affair and a signaller) told me a few days ago that he saw and left Holst's body in the German trenches on 19th. July at Fleurbaix.' Second statement, 3016 Lance Corporal J.A. BOYD, 58th Bn (patient, 5th General Hospital, Rouen), 28 March 1917: 'Some months ago, the Orderly Room Clerk ([2023] Sgt.
