'For gallantry and devotion to duty. He has carried out his many duties in such a way as to bring credit to himself and give satisfaction to all concerned. In the line, his example has always been one of coolness and courage, and at all times he has been found thoroughly trustworthy and reliable. When the battalion was holding the line at Villers-Bretonneux, in May, he did some most valuable work as a patrol leader.'
