'This N.C.O. was in charge of forward ammunition dumps during the operations from 17th September onwards, and materially assisted in maintaining the ammunition supply, in spite of the heavy shelling to which his area was at times subjected. On one occasion, by his prompt action in extinguishing a fire which was started by enemy shell fire in close proximity to a large supply of ammunition, he saved several hundred rounds at a time when they were urgently required.'
