'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of parties carrying stores forward to the front line. His men were several times dispersed by shell fire, but he re-organized them and got them forward. He continued at this work for eighteen hours, showing great courage and sound judgment throughout.'

Military Medal

'Throughout the whole of the preparations for the offensive operations of 4th October, 1917 near MOLENAARELSTHOEK east of YPRES he displayed excellent judgment, untiring zeal and an utter contempt for personal danger. By his leadership and example he greatly increased the efficiency of his men. On the morning of the 4th October, he rendered valuable service by expediting the passage of a large working party through a heavy barrage and whilst so doing was badly wounded.'
