'For extreme gallantry and devotion to duty. On 11th April 1917 in the attack on the HINDENBURG LINE near REINCOURT this Non Commissioned Officer was in charge of Lewis Gun section. On reaching the second objective he at once set up his gun in a commanding position and opened on the ranks of the retiring Germans. During the numerous counter attacks he acted with great coolness and judgement inflicting heavy casualties of the attacking foe. When our men were ultimately compelled to retire he remained behind to the last in spite of a hail of hostile bombs and bullets, covering our retreat. Not till almost surrounded by the enemy did he vacate his position. Still carrying his gun he dashed through their encircling ranks and through a tornado of rifle and machine gun fire made his way back. He carried his gun till it was hit by a bullet and broken and only then when absolutely exhausted did he leave it. He showed magnificent courage and splendid coolness and judgement in the most trying circumstances.'
