'During the attack on Peronne, on 1st September, 1918, when his company commander became a casualty early in the operations, he assumed command, and, though himself wounded, he led the men with gallant determination and skill. He was wounded a second time, but remained at duty, showing a fine example of endurance and devotion to duty that greatly inspired his men.'
