War service: Western Front

Embarked Fremantle, 9 December 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 10 January 1917, and marched in to 11th Training Bn. Proceeded overseas to France, 10 April 1917; taken on strength, 44th Bn, 12 April 1917.

Admitted to 11th Australian Field Ambulance, 6 May 1917 (mumps), and transferred same day to 7th General Hospital, St Omer. Discharged to Base Depot, 26 May 1917; rejoined Bn, 30 May 1917.

Wounded in action, 4 October 1917 (gun shot wound, right forearm and right thigh), and admitted to 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to 2nd Canadian General Hospital, 5 October 1917; to England, 16 October 1917, and admitted to Graylingwell War Hospital, Chichester, 17 October 1917 (wound: slight); discharged on furlough, 24 November 1917, to report to No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 8 December 1917. Marched out to Overseas Training Depot, Longbridge Deverill, 20 December 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 17 January 1918; rejoined Bn, 23 January 1918.

Wounded in action (2nd occasion), 4 July 1918 (gun shot wound, buttock), and admitted to 13th Australian Field Ambulance; transferred same day to 5th Casualty Clearing Station, and thence to Ambulance Train No 1; admitted to 12th General Hospital, Rouen; transferred to England, 7 July 1918, and admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham, 8 July 1918; discharged on furlough, 23 July 1918, to report to No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 6 August 1918. Marched out to Overseas Training Brigade, Londbridge Deverill, 29 August 1918; proceeded overseas to France, 29 September 1918; rejoined Bn, 7 October 1918.

Marched out to England for return to Australia, 28 April 1919; marched in to No 3 Group, Codford, 29 April 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Konig Luise', 21 June 1919; disembarked Fremantle, 2 August 1919; discharged, Perth, 10 September 1919.
