'For conspicuous courage and devotion to duty. In the advance near CHUIGNES on 24th August, 1918, Private HOWE repeatedly made journeys through an intense barrage in order to bring up S.A.A. water and spare parts for the guns. His utter disregard of personal danger enabled the guns to continue giving covering fire at a most critical time.'
