Embarked Cairns for Thursday Island (War Station garrison duty), 8 August 1914. Enlisted, 14 August 1914, for service outside Australia. Re-embarked Thursday Island, 16 August 1914, Troopship 'Kanowna', to take part in the capture of German New Guinea. Taken on strength, Australian Naval & Military Expeditionary Force, 6 September 1914. Returned to Townsville, 18 September 1914, on account of trouble caused by firemen on the troopship; did not participate in the capture of German New Guinea. Discharged from the AN&MEF, 18 September 1914. Eligible for the British War Medal. Enlisted in the AIF, 7 September 1914.
