'On 24.9.17 at HOOGE TUNNEL and HOOGE CRATER, during a heavy enemy bombardment of the YPRES Menin Road he displayed marked and conspicuous gallantry. He assisted in the evacuation of wounded, directing operations of his party, with complete disregard of his personal safety. He travelled between the various posts under heavy shell fire and throughout the action set a splendid example of high courage and cherry optimism to his men.'
