War service: Western Front Embarked Melbourne, 11 May 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 20 July 1917, and marched in to 13th Training Bn, Codford. Admitted to Group Hospital, Codford, 3 October 1917 (influenza); marched in to 13th Training Bn from hospital, 13 October 1917. Marched in to Machine Gun Training Depot, Grantham, 27 October 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 1 January 1918; taken on strength, 24th Machine Gun Company, 3 February 1918. Unit designation changed to 4th Machine Gun Bn, 1 April 1918. Wounded in action, 19 August 1918 (gas), and admitted to 12th Australian Field Ambulance and thence to 55th Casualty Clearing Station; transferred by Ambulance Train, 21 August 1918, and admitted to 5th General Hospital, Rouen, 22 August 1918; to England, 29 August 1918, and admitted to Kitchener Military Hospital, Brighton, 30 August 1918.
