'During operations at BROODSEINDE RIDGE east of YPRES, Pte. HUTTON showed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Although buried by a shell which wounded the remainder of the gun team he refused to leave his gun as this would have meant his gun being thrown out of action. His coolness and courage throughout the whole of the operation was a very high order and set a splendid example to those near him.'
