'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Whilst his battery was under very heavy shell fire an intense fire was started by a direct hit upon his gun pit, and spread to an ammunition dump. In company with an officer he proceeded twice to the fire and extinguished it, at very great personal risk from enemy fire and the explosion of the burning ammunition.'
