Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 23 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 30 March 1916.

Wounded in action, 6 May 1916 (gun shot wound, hand). Admitted to 26th General Hospital, 27 May 1916; discharged to Base Details, 29 May 1916; rejoined Bn, 31 July 1916.

Admitted to 5th General Hospital, Rouen, 10 March 1917 (pneumonia); transferred to England, 12 March 1917, and admitted to 2nd Southern General Hospital, 13 March 1917. Discharged, 20 April 1917, and granted furlough to report to No. 4 Command Depot, Wareham, 5 May 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France, 26 July 1917; rejoined Bn, 19 August 1917.

Tried by Field General Court Martial, 9 December 1917 on charges of (1) deserting His Majesty's Forces (2) an act to the prejudice of good conduct and military discipline. Found not guilty of destertion but guilty of being Absent Without Leave: sentenced to 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour. Released from No. 5 Military Prison, 26 July 1918; remainder of sentence suspended. Rejoined 4th Bn, 28 July 1918.

Wounded in action, 22 August 1918 (gun shot wound, left foot). Transferred to England, 25 May 1918, and admitted to Beaufort War Hospital, Bristol, 27 August 1918. Granted furlough, 2 October 1918, to report to No. 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 16 October 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'Ceramic', 25 January 1919; disembarked Hobart, 11 March 1919 (suffering influenza); discharged, 18 May 1919.
