'During the operations east of YPRES on 4th October 1917, he was one of a party employed on the construction of a strong point vicinity of MOLENAARELSTHOEK. He gave great assistance to his section Officer in locating and setting out the work. On proceeding to the work, owing to heavy machine gun fire, it was necessary to take the working party over the ridge in small parties and on four occasions he crossed leading the parties and setting them to work. He did splendid work supervising and his confifdent bearing greatly encouraged the men.'
