War service: Egypt, Western Front Transferred to Cyclists' Corps, 5th Division, Tel el Kebir, 17 April 1916. Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 6 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 16 June 1916. Admitted to 2nd Casualty Clearing Station, 28 September 1916 (debility); transferred to England, 1 October 1916; admitted to 2nd Southern General Hospital, Birmingham, 2 October 1916 (debility: severe). Admitted to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 11 October 1916. Found guilty, 9 April 1917, of being absent without leave: awarded confinement to barracks for 3 days and 3 days' forfeiture of pay. Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Benalla', 25 August 1917; disembarked Sydney, 26 October 1917; discharged, 24 November 1917. Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal Committed suicide, 1 May 1931. Coroner's report stated: 'Injuries self-caused while temporarily mentally deranged, by casting himself from a moving electric railway train - such mental derangement being the result of ill health ... shell shock while on active service.' |
