Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry on several occasions, notably when he laid a telephone wire across the open under heavy fire. He was also conspicuous during the capture, and holding of, a trench, where he held on till utterly exhausted. By his determination he insured the retention of the trench.'
