'On 29th September 1918, near Bellicourt, he was in charge of a company constructing a road from Villeret. Despite enemy barrage, he got the road through to Bellicourt, and arrived at that place with the infantry. He personally reconnoitred forward, and when he saw it was impossible to get ahead, owing to infantry being held up, he withdrew his company to a line of trenches. He showed cool courage and ability.'
