Military Medal 'In front of Hamel - Villers Bretonneux. At 3 a.m. on the morning of the 8th August, 1918, the 49th Battery Wagon Lines had moved forward and came under a heavy burst of H.E. 4.2" shells wounding 4 men, and killing 7 and wounding 6 horses. Gunner James immediately went to the assistance of the wounded, and under a heavy fire attended to and dressed their wounds, then assisted by others he carried them across a heavily shelled area to a Dressing Station 800 yards away. Several shells burst very close to Gunner James and another man, one of which set fire to one of the men's clothing. Gunner James returned immediately through the shelled area and continued to assist. This man's excellent conduct and splendid example are deserving of special mention.'
