'On the night 16th/17th October, 1917, whilst acting as guide to a Platoon taking over an advanced posts on the BROODSEINDE RIDGE, he received a severe wound in the eye with apiece of shell. Although suffering great pain he refused to have his wound dressed until he had taken the platoon out - a distance of 400 yards, and afterwards guided the troops who had been relieved back to Company Headquarters; his courage and coolness under heavy fire was a fine example to the Platoon.'
