War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Melbourne, 9 November 1915; disembarked Suez, 7 December 1915. Found guilty, 16 May 1916, of being absent from parade, 15 May 1916: awarded 4 days' confined to barracks. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 16 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 23 June 1916. Wounded in action, 20 July 1916. Previous report of wounded now, 28 July 1916, 'Killed in Action, 20 July 1916'. Buried Eaton Hall Cemetery, 20 July 1916. Statement, Red Cross File No 1430614, 826 CSM H.J. BRITTER, D Company, 31st Bn (patient, 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, England), 23 February 1917: 'Informant did not see him killed but was present at his burial in the Batt. plot beside the road at Fleurbaix, about 100 yards from Mine Avenue.
