Embarked from Sydney, 11 July 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 9 September 1916. Found guilty, Brightlingsea, 2 December 1916, of being absent from church parade: awarded 24 hours' detention. Proceeded overseas to France, 13 February 1917.

Transferred to 2nd Division Engineers, 24 February 1917; taken on strength, 7th Field Company Engineers, 26 February 1917.

Proceeded to Summer Rest Camp, 24 August 1917; rejoined unit, 9 September 1917. Appointed Lance Corporal, 21 October 1917 (unit in Belgium).

Admitted to 9th Australian Field Ambulance, 26 November 1917 (scabies); transferred to Divisional Rest Station, 26 November 1917; rejoined unit, 8 December 1917.

Admitted to 6th Australian Field Ambulance, 19 December 1917 (boils), and transferred to Divisional Rest Station; to duty, 24 December 1917.On leave to United Kingdom, 23 January 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 9 February 1918.
