Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On 11th October, 1917, in the vicinity of BELLEWARDE RIDGE, east of YPRES, while getting a gun out of a shell hole, the party came under very heavy shell fire. A number of men and horses were wounded. Gunner BARTON immediately took charge, had the wounded dressed and removed to a place of safety, re-organised his party and by his own sterling work and example extricated and removed his guns. His work throughout has been a splendid example of devotion to duty.'
