As patrol commander he carried out a reconnaissance under heavy machine gun, which enabled the battalion line to be advanced without loss. Later, when again in command of a patrol, he made a successful reconnaissance along his company front, then entering and passing through Bony, he pushed onto the main Hindenburg line, engaging and inflicting casualties on the enemy.'
