'On the 7th/8th and 9th June, 1917, during operations south of MESSINES for fine work whilst attached to a machine gun team. His team was subjected to heavy hostile fire and suffered considerable casualties. He showed initiative and judgment in maintaining his position, and when ordered to advance to a new position he displayed great courage and determination in the moving forward of his gun and ammunition.'
