Military Medal 'Was a Company Runner during the attack near ZONNEBEKE on the 16th September, 1917. The route from Company to Battalion Headquarters was subject to heavy barrage and continually under fire from machine guns and snipers. JONES traversed this route many times throughout the day and night previous to the attack carrying messages, guiding carrying parties and assisting to lay "direction tapes". On the morning of the 26th September, 1917, when the attack was launched he carried back a message that the 1st Objective had been taken. The enemy had placed down an intense barrage across the route but JONES delivered his message and then collapsed from sheer exhaustion. He did his work with uncomplaining cheerfulness and was always the first to volunteer for a dangerous "run".'
