War service: Egypt, Western Front Admitted to 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, Abbassia, 12 November 1915; discharged, 14 January 1916; total period of treatment for venereal disease: 64 days. Allotted to 56th Bn, and taken on strength, Tel el Kebir, 16 February 1916. Admitted to 14th Field Ambulance, 10 April 1916 (influenza). Transferred to and taken on strength of 60th Bn, Ferry Post, 19 May 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Reported Missing, 19 July 1916. Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 4 August 1917, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 19 July 1916'. Note, Red Cross File No 1460401: 'No trace Germany. Cert. by Capt. Mills. 10.10.19.' Statement, 4937 Corporal H. WILLIAMS, 15 June 1917: 'On the 19th July at Fleurbaix Informant saw Jones in our front line trenches just before the charge. Informant did not see Jones again, but from his own experience, he believes that he was killed in No Man's Land on the night of the 19th.' |
