Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry on the 23rd day of August, 1918, at HERLEVILLE WOOD. During the attack, when the rest of his section had become casualties, this N.C.O. carrying his Lewis Gun and panniers under heavy Machine Gun fire crept forward alone and succeeded in silencing two hostile Machine Guns, which were inflicting heavy casualties on the advancing troops. He kept his gun in action until he had expanded all his ammunition (six magazines). While crawling back for more ammunition, this gallant N.C.O. was wounded.'
