Embarked Mudros on HT 'Caledonia' and proceeded to Gibraltar, 7 October 1915; admitted to General Hospital, Gibraltar, 15 October 1915. Embarked Gibraltar on 'Franconia' and proceeded overseas to England, 8 November 1915; admitted to 4th Southern General Hospital, Plymouth, 12 November 1915 (varicose ulcer).

Found guilty, 21 May 1916, of being absent without leave, 20 January to 1 May 1916: awarded 84 days' detention; forfeited total of 205 days' pay. Moved out from No 2 Australian Command Depot, Weymouth, 20 July 1916; marched into Command Depot, Salisbury, 20 July 1916.

Moved out from 1st Training Brigade and proceeded to France, 8 October 1916; marched into 1st Australian Infantry Base Depot, Etaples, 9 October 1916. Transferred to 13th Bn, 19 October 1916, and taken on strength, 20 October 1916. Transferred to 3rd Bn, 24 November 1916, and taken on strength, 2 December 1916.

Admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance, 19 January 1917 (mumps), and transferred to 39th Casualty Clearing Station; to 14th General Hospital, Wimereux, 21 January 1917; to 8th General Hospital, Wimereux, 29 January 1917; to No 1 Convalescent Depot, Boulogne, 9 February 1917; marched into 1st Australian Division Base Depot, Etaples, 13 February 1917; moved out, 4 March 1917; rejoined unit, 11 March 1917.
