'For courage and devotion to duty during the attack on DERNANCOURT RIDGE South West of ALBERT on 5th April, 1918. When all the officers near him were killed and wounded he rallied the men and led them on. He found that his left flank was exposed, so, taking some men from his second wave he made a defensive flank. by this act he averted what would have been a critical position. Although wounded he carried on until wounded a second time.'
