He later went to France, and fought there in the latter half of 1917 and 1918. The physical conditions were harsh: on one occasion he remained in mud up to his armpits until found by a runner who called a rescue party. He was invalided back to England in October 1918, and died on 10 January 1919 of tuberculosis at Australian General Hospital, Harefield, Middlesex, England, and was buried in Harefield Cemetery |
