Military Medal 'At Eterpigny on 29/08/1918 and in the vicinity of the Somme Canal this NCO displayed conspicuous bravery and initiative as a leader whilst in charge of a platoon. During the advance West of Eterpigny he encountered a withering fire from machine guns on the canal bank. He led his platoon forward skilfully and with great coolness, outflanked the enemy position and caused them to retire. At this time he was subjected to a heavy fire from field batteries firing over open sights from the East bank of the canal. He quickly followed up the enemy, lined the canal bank and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy as they retired across the canal, and captured three prisoners. He immediately crossed the canal in pursuit but was unable to find a passage through the marsh on the east side and had to return. Throughout the action he showed exceptional coolness and skill in a very difficult situation, and set a splendid example to his platoon.'
