'For great courage and devotion to duty. During operations on the Hindenburg Line on 29 September, 1918, he was in charge of his gun when it was temporarily rendered out of action. He and one of his crew were wounded. He remained with his gun, which he brought into action again, and did not report his wound until after the barrage was completed.'
