'During attack on German position north of FLERS on morning of 5th November, 1916, led his platoon into the attack with great dash and splendid personal example. When held up, he crawled back to our lines, and reported what had happened. He guided reinforcements out and when they got stopped he again crawled back to our lines to report, all the time under heavy shell and machine gun fire. He continued doing this and assisting to organise his platoon, reinforcements and company until he got wounded.'
