Enlisted West Maitland, 21 November 1915. Posted as a deserter (on furlough) from 35th Bn, Broadmeadows, 8 March 1916, having deserted on 24 January 1916.

Re-enlisted, 11 January 1917.

War service: England

Embarked Sydney, 7 February 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 11 April 1917. Marched in to 5th Training Bn, Rollestone, 11 April 1917. Medical report, 1 May 1917, on disability ('senility': age 47; stated age at attestation, 40.75 years) stated: 'Since enlistment on 11/1/17 ... has only done 1 march & he had to fall out on account of his feet. His wind is fair & general health good.'

Found guilty, 17 May 1917, of being absent without leave from midnight, 14 May, to 10 pm, 16 May 1917: forfeited 4 days' pay and confined to camp for 2 days; total pay forfeiture: 6 days'

Marched out to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 5 June 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Medic', 24 August 1918; disembarked Sydney, 9 October 1918; discharged (senility), 29 October 1918.
