'For gallant conduct at DERNANCOURT South West of ALBERT on 5th April, 1918. At great personal risk he kept up a constant fire from his Lewis Gun from an advanced position, throughout the early stages of the attack. Later, although himself under very heavy shell fire and enfilading Machine gun fire, he covered the withdrawal of a flank. his untiring energy and courage set a fine example to others and assisted in stemming the attack on his front.'
