Promoted Sergeant, 3 March 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 17 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 23 June 1916. Posted missing, 19 July 1916. Now, 23 April 1917, ruled by the Assistant Adjutant General to be 'Killed in Action, 19 July 1916' on the basis of a statement made by Private J. Gray on 11 April 1917. Note on B.103, 'buried in vicinity of Fleurbaix'. Statement, Red Cross File No 1500407, 3734 Pte W.A. FORSTER, B Company, 58th Bn (patient, No 26 General Hospital, Etaples), 15 November 1916: 'He belonged to VIII Pl. B. Co. and was killed at Fleurbaix on July 19th. Pte. F. Paine, VIII Pl. B. Co. and Sgt. Major Stubbs, B. Co. saw his body lying on the German barbed wire. I left there in a wounded condition and do not know anything as to the burial of the body.'
