War service: Western Front Embarked from Sydney, 24 November 1917; disembarked Devonport, 27 March 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 18 October 1917; taken on strength, 22nd Machine Gun Company, Belgium, 1 November 1917. Wounded in action, 3 March 1918 (gas); admitted to 55th General Hospital, Boulogne, 5 April 1918; rejoined unit, 7 May 1918. Wounded in action, 28 May 1918 (gas); admitted to 26th General Hospital, Etaples, 31 May 1918; evacuated to England, 3 June 1918, and admitted to Norfolk War Hospital, Norwich. Transferred to No. 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 18 July 1918; marched out to No. 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 9 September 1918. Applied for discharge in United Kingdom, 11 February 1920: reason: 'That I have a girl in a certain condition (4.5 months the Doctor says) and wish to marry her if I can get my discharge in England. [Letter to Assistant Adjutant General, 11 February 1920, states: '... & wish to take the only honest step and marry her'. My prospects are much better in England under the circumstances than in Australia and [I] can go immediately into employment & have a furnished home for a wedding present.'
