Proceeded overseas to France from England, 16 September 1916; joined 20th Bn, in the field, 2 October 1916.

Wounded in action, 3 May 1917 (gun shot wound, hand), and admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance; transferred same day to 3rd Casualty Clearing Station, and thence by Ambulance Train to 13th General Hospital, Boulogne; admitted, 4 May 1917; transferred to No 1 Convalescent Depot, 5 May 1917; to No 3 Rest Camp, 29 May 1917; rejoined Bn, 25 June 1917.

Wounded in action, 1 October 1917 (second occasion) (gun shot wound, left hip), and admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance; transferred same day to 2nd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, and then to Ambulance Train No 26; admitted to 22nd General Hospital, Camiers, 2 October 1917; transferred to England, 6 October 1917, and admitted to Edmonton War Hospital (wound, left buttock: slight); to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 7 October 1917; discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 15 October 1917.

Marched in to No 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 29 October 1917. Admitted to Brigade Hospital, Hurdcott, 23 January 1918; marched into No 3 Command Depot from hospital, 26 January 1918.

Admitted to Brigade Hospital, 22 February 1918 (swelling hand); discharged to Training Depot, Hurdcott, 4 March 1918.

Proceeded overseas to France, 15 May 1918; rejoined Bn, 20 May 1918.

Found guilty, 4 July 1918, of (1) being in improper possession of 2 bottles of wine; (2) being in possession of a hand grenade contrary to GROs; (3) being in town without a pass 28 June 1918: awarded forfeiture of 14 days' pay.

Wounded in action (third occasion), 13 July 1918 (gun shot wound, left hand), admitted to 6th Australian Field Ambulance and transferred to 55th Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to Ambulance Train, 14 July 1918, and admitted to 16th General Hospital, Le Treport; discharged to Base Depot, 4 September 1918; rejoined Bn, 26 September 1918.

Wounded in action (fourth occasion), 3 October 1918 (shell wound, left elbow), admitted to 6th Australian Field Ambulance, and transferred same day to 58th Casualty Clearing Station; to Ambulance Train, 3 October, and transferred to 12th General Hospital, Rouen, 4 October 1918; discharged to No 2 Convalescent Depot, 6 October 1918; to No 11 Convalescent Depot, Buchy, 10 October 1918; rejoined Bn, 15 November 1918.

To Educational Course, 13 January 1919; rejoined Bn, 27 March 1919.

Marched out to England for return to Australia, 4 April 1919.

Commenced return to Australia from Liverpool on board HT 'Nestor', 20 May 1919; disembarked Sydney, 4 July 1919; discharged, Sydney, 19 August 1919.
