Military Medal 'For inspiring gallantry under heavy shell fire. He picked up a man who lay wounded, in an exposed position, and carried him 30 yards on his back. During this bombardment by the enemy, the Battalion lost 8 killed and 15 wounded and movement in rear of the trenches was prevented by the heavy fire, which was sweeping the parapet. The wounded man would certainly have been killed if not rescued so promptly. By his cheery laughing and talking he encouraged and cheered his platoon constantly moving up and down the line.'
