'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. The services rendered by this N.C.O. has been most meritorious, and he has been twice mentioned in despatches. On two occasions when he has been acting as company sergeant major, when the battalion was in line, he has c arried out his duties with great courage under fire and in a highly efficient manner, setting a fine example of devotion to duty to all ranks of the battalion.'
