Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the Battle of YPRES (Phase 5) 12th October 1917. This man acted as Headquarters Runner and on several occasions carried messages to the front line through extremely heavy Artillery and Machine gun fire. Throughout he showed great courage and absolute fearlessness, and on two occasions volunteered to take messages when the other runners had been killed.'
