'From 25 February to 16 September, 1918, he has rendered most gallant and devoted service. During the period the battalion was in the Hazebrouck sector, and in the operations in August and early September at Lihons and Chuignolles. He has shown consistent gallantry in laying and repairing lines under heavy enemy fire, his work being always most efficiently done. He has on several critical occasions re-established communications, his work being of vital importance to our success.'

Wounded in action, 20 September 1918 (gun shot wound, head), and admitted to 4th Australian Field Ambulance; transferred to 12th Casualty Clearing Station, 20 September 1918; to Ambulance Train 33, 21 September 1918; to 5th General Hospital, Rouen, 22 September 1918; to England, 23 September 1918, and admitted to Voluntary Aid Detachment Hospital, Cheltenham (off 2nd Southern General Hospital, Bristol), 24 September 1918 (wound slight); discharged on furlough, 1 November 1918, to report to No 1 Command Depot, 15 November 1918. Taken on strength, AIF Canteens, 15 November 1918.

Awarded Distinguished Conduct Medal.

Promoted Temporary Staff Sergeant, 1 April 1919. Married Minnie Gertrude RICHARDSON, 21 Hillaries Road, Erdington, at Erdington Established Church, 9 June 1919. Granted pre-embarkation leave, 8-13 September 1919; indefinite leave, 3 November 1919.

Commenced return to Australia from Liverpool on board HT 'Megantic', 9 January 1920; disembarked Sydney, 13 February 1920; discharged, 1 May 1920.
