Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During a heavy barrage, he volunteered to go up to the front line when it looked as if nothing could live. Shortly after starting his arm was shattered, but he continued for another 500 yards, ascertained the situation and returned with the information, fainting through loss of blood as he delivered it.'
