Military Medal 'For courage and devotion to duty. This man is a member of No. 3 Section of this Company attached to the 14th Australian Infantry Brigade. At 4 a.m. on 1st October 1918, on the ST QUENTIN front, he was detailed with another linesman to run a cable from Brigade Headquarters near TEMPLEUX-la-GUERARD to the front line in order to provide communication to two Battalions which were to attack at 6 a.m. The cable had to be laid in darkness across 4000 yards of country over which they had not previously been. They succeeded in establishing communication before the hour of attack. On our barrage opening the enemy heavily counter barraged and the cable was cut in several places. Sappers KIRK, with his companion, was out working continuously on the cable under very heavy enemy artillery fire. It was largely due to his courage, disregard for personal safety, and devotion to duty that communication was maintained between Brigade and Battalions during an important period.'
