Military Medal

Gallantry on Hindenburg Line North of Bellicourt on 30 September 1918.
Recommendation date: 3 October 1918

FateReturned to Australia 2 June 1919

Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an attack on the Hindenburg Line North of BELLICOURT on 30th September 1918. As the trench which was subsequently captured was being approached by the attacking troops, heavy Machine Gun fire was opened from an important enemy strong point, which held up the advance. In company with an N.C.O., Private KLEIN moved forward under the very heavy Machine Gun fire and with great dash successfully bombed the enemy gunners until they were forced to retire, leaving behind them two light Machine Guns. This prompt and gallant action enabled the attacking troops to advance at once to the final assault, which was successful. Private KLEIN displayed great coolness bombing the enemy until the counter attack broke down.'
