'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Whilst his battery was being heavily shelled he and a 2nd Lieutenant at great personal risk from exploding ammunition and enemy shell fire, extinguished a fire which had broken out, thereby preventing it from spreading and saving a great quantity of ammunition.'
